“In an office boardroom, after everyone else has left for the day, two men are confronted by a third, who it turns out has been hired by each of them to kill the other. At least, that’s what he says. But is it true, and how do they resolve the issue? A tense war of nerves ensues.

This is the set up for ANTE, a cynically witty, sharply-played, elegantly constructed little thriller, which makes intelligent use of its single location to ratchet up the tension and growing sense of claustrophobia. The script by Paul Thomas is a smart and devious new take on genre archetypes. The performances by David Edward-Robertson, Greg Kelly, & Steve McTigue are expertly pitched: three very different actors, each with a very different style, playing very different characters – yet they gel so well together on screen. Chris Cronin’s stylish direction ensures that the film never seems limited or stage bound by its single location. Fluid camera work and fast energetic cutting create a sense of continued dramatic tension, so that even though the bulk of the action lies in the dialogue and facial expressions of the characters, the viewer is gripped from the underplayed start to the darkly humorous and satisfying conclusion. In short, the film is a black hearted little gem. All involved have played a winning hand.”
